The Science Of:

"Making Characters That Make Sense"

"<X> is a powerful <Y>. She/he acts <tough/cold/distant/shy> and isn't very social, but is nice if you get to know her/him. She/he doesn't always fight, but if you hurt the people she/he cares about she/he will become very aggressive and <Z> anyone to protect her/his friends."

     - A fucking stupid line in to many people's profiles, webpages, and minds

The first thing you need to know about making characters ... A contrived or arbitrary plot device may annoy or confuse the reader, causing a loss of the suspension of disbelief. Therefore, if you want to include things in your character design that appeal to your unique tastes.. you need to find ways to include them without just snapping your fingers and making it so.

God-moding doesn't just apply to role-playing with other people -- it can also enter into your character's backstory, history, or other wild circumstances such as your own character's birth. The more you fly off the beaten path to get to your destination? The less likely people are to take your character seriously. There are ways to make *anything* work as a character so long as you go through the necessary steps to make it plausible and understandable how they got there.

Each of the lines below will eventually be a link to a page that goes into detail how I would go about that, and then a link to a 'finished profile' entry, so you can see how it works out. Each entry will talk about arch-type pit-falls, following themes, and the use of music and color-schemes.

WARNING: This page is HUGELY under construction to be more personable, and less.. snotty? Being both direct but personable without being verbose is the eventual intention of this page. Balance on that triangle will fluctuate until completion -- like with most of my other pages on this site -- try not to be offended till it's done. <3

 - You can make a drow priestess of Lolth and a slaver who is also an interesting person -- I did.

 - You can make a demonic succubus whom walks secretly among mortals, tempting them to dangerous ideas.

 - You can make an uber-dom slave-master people will think is amazing for his over-time character development.

 - You can make a noblewoman with submissive fantasies whom takes dangerous or scandelous risks to fulfill them.

 - You can make an elven warrior with a tragic lost love, a vendetta against a specific race and a yerning for..?

 - You can make a warrior demi-godess whom enjoys lounging around on pillows and being fed grapes by slaves.

 - You can make a vampire, numbed over a hundred years, who's only pleasure is found vicariously through warm living flesh.
